Using a web font for a website can be a great design choice. The majority of the time, using a web font like a Google font, will have no problem displaying that particular font on a site. However, if it does, as long as there are good fallback options in the font stack, the website will still display the look and feel desired by the original font. Selecting web safe fonts, that look similar to the selected web font, as the fallback fonts are the best way to ensure the site always looks how it was intended.
Email
Not all email clients offer universal support for web fonts. When web fonts are not supported by the email client, the fallback options that have been selected in the font stack may work, and other times the email client’s fallback font will automatically get used instead. In some email clients, if there is a web font in the stack, the email client will disregard the entire stack that has been built and will use their own fallbacks automatically which may not match brand standards. At this time, because not all email clients have support for web fonts, web fonts shouldn’t be used in emails. In order to keep brand consistency, web safe fonts should be used for emails instead.
