Edit a Page
TRANSCRIPT
Let's review editing a page, and a few special features for page edits.
- First, I'll search for the page I want to change.
- Rather than clicking on the page name, I'll click on the Content & Layout shortcut button on the right side. I've got a view of my page here. If I've labeled my sections properly, it should be easy to find the one that I want to change and edit it.
- I'll make a small change here.
- If that's all I need, I'll click on the Publish button and I'm done. But I'm going to save this section and make a few more changes.
- Under the Layout tab, I can make modifications to the column structure of my pages. For example, I might decide that my main container needs to have three columns instead of two. If I’m on one of StarChapter’s newer designs, I can switch between the default and alternate color scheme, to add emphasis for my content. Or I might want to add a column split halfway down the page. Both of those are possible here.
- Back in the Content tab, we can put our content sections where they belong. If everything looks good, we can publish this modified page.
We also have a few special features for page editing. You might sometimes see a notice about a page being locked. This happens when our system thinks someone's editing the page. It keeps board members from accidentally tripping over one another. While you're editing a page, the page you're in will appear as locked to another user. That lock remains as long as the system knows you're editing the page. However, if you exit the page in a non-standard way, that lock might be for you; our system thinks you may still be in there.
Normally, I would cancel out of my edits or delete my draft. Instead, I'm going to go to another link in the left menu. Now I see that my page is locked. If you run into this, don't panic; the lock automatically expires in five minutes.
You may occasionally see what looks like duplicate copies of published pages. One of these, labeled as published, cannot be edited. That's because there is a draft copy of this page below that has to be dealt with. As soon as you start working with an existing page, StarChapter creates a draft copy. All your work is done on that draft. That way, no one will see the work in progress, until you decide that you're ready to publish it.
When you create new pages, those are made in draft status, too. Nothing will be visible to visitors until you're ready. Because this draft copy is created right away, you can only have one draft of each page at a time. Otherwise, they start to multiply and can be hard to keep track of. So if we need to edit this page, we'll go into the Content and Layout button for this draft. We'll preview it to see what's changed from the published version. There might not be any changes at all, someone may have just been poking around. Once we've reviewed the draft, we'll close the pop-up and choose to either publish it, or delete it.
And that's all you need to know for editing your pages. Please check out our other videos, or for a more comprehensive look at managing content in general, check out our full-length content training in the knowledgebase.
